2024 LIV Board Election

Each year, the Board election shapes the future direction of the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV), and your voice plays a pivotal role in this journey.  Now is your chance to vote in the election of Member Directors who will have a seat on the Board and play an active role governing the LIV.

Four vacancies for Member Directors are currently open on the Board of the LIV:

  2. Member Director
  3. Member Director
  4. Member Director, Suburban Legal Practitioner category

Each Member Director who is elected in the 2024 Board Election will take office on 20 November 2024 from the conclusion of the LIV 2024 Annual General Meeting. The term of office for three positions will be three years. The term of office for one position will be one year. The length of the respective terms of office of each of those Member Directors will depend on the number of votes that each receives.

Election period

The voting will open on Monday 28 October 2024 and will close at 5pm on Monday 11 November 2024.

Eligibility to vote

To be eligible to vote you must be a full practising member. Affiliate, graduate and student members, and Incorporated Legal Practices do not have voting entitlements.

How to vote

Voting is by a quota preferential method of proportional representation in accordance with clause 46.3(5) of Part B of the Constitution of the Law Institute of Victoria Limited (LIV). In this system, voters rank their choices in order of preference, rather than simply casting a single vote for one candidate. Instructions on how to vote are provided on the ballot.

Candidates

The LIV is pleased to announce that it has received a total of 11 nominations for the four positions that are available, of which three are for the position of Member Director, Suburban Legal Practitioner category.

Voting process

Before voting, LIV Members who are eligible to vote will require their LIV Member Number and the postcode which is linked to their LIV membership.

Conduct

As in prior elections, voting will be conducted online,  and no hard copy ballot papers will be available or dispatched.

Link Market Services Limited is conducting this ballot process, which will be overseen by Returning Officers and former Presidents (in alphabetical order) Caroline Counsel, Stuart Webb, and Mark Woods.

The order of candidates on the ballot was drawn by lot by the Returning Officers.

All votes submitted through this system are anonymous and the method by which members cast their vote is secure.

Election results

Successful candidates will be declared elected as directors at the Annual General Meeting to be held at 5pm on Wednesday 20 November 2024 at the LIV, Level 13, 140 William Street, Melbourne VIC 3000.
